Early practice included both criminal and commercial litigation, highlights of which were acting as Counsel in the first murder trial in Australia in which DNA evidence was sought to be tendered, and appearing before five Judges of the Supreme Court of Tasmania in a successful Attorney General’s Reference.
Later practice focused more in the areas of strategic commercial advice, civil disputes, planning and property law, estate planning and employment law, and family law property matters. Roger has acted in thousands of matters for individuals, small businesses, large corporations and Government bodies. He and the team at Abetz Curtis have in recent years acted in several of the largest corporate transactions in the State’s history.
Roger has held multiple directorships in both ASX listed, public and private companies. These include Charles Davis Ltd, Harris Scarfe Ltd, G.P. FitzGerald & Co Ltd, Co Operative Motors Ltd, Commissioner of AFL Tasmania, The Friends School and MyState Community Foundation. He is Life Member of the Clarence Football Club where he served between 1984 and 2011 in various roles including President, Deputy President and Patron. In other sport he coached schoolboy rowing crews at The Friends School for over 5 years including the undefeated Under 14 champion crew in 2006.
He follows Collingwood, which draws a mixed reception from clients.
